Dave Arneson at CoastCon XXXI'll be in attendance at CoastCon in a couple of weeks, and Arneson is slated to be there.
Is there anything anyone would like me to ask, or pass along, to the man?

My best wishes, in any case. That man has influenced my games in a way no other designer has, I think. (Except maybe Carl Sargent.) :good:

Yeah, but he also did "Iuz the Evil" and "Ivid the Undying", which I liked a lot.

That's cool, RedPriest. Is the CON down in NO?

Apparently.

Actually, my usual screen name is from a long-time character of mine. "Ivid the Bowman", or, "Ivid the Coward", was afamous Greyhawk adventurer, who survived many a dungeon crawl by, well, standing in the second line.

Nope, but it's right up the road in Biloxi, MS. It's just about an hour and a half drive.

Hey Red Priest,
Let us know how Coast Con is nowadays! I used to go to CC regularly in the early-mid 1980s when I lived in Greenville, MS and it was always a great con. I hope they've kept the ol' girl going well!

I'm sad to already report to you that the years have not been kind CC. After taking a 10 year hiatus from the Con, I re-visited the old girl back in '05 and was disappointed to discover that a Con that once boasted upwards of about 3,000 attendees had dropped to what was obviously less than 1,000. Everything was anemic. Very few games were scheduled, and those that were rarely even materialized. The big movie room had vanished completely. Instead of having at least a dozen video rooms, there were 3, IIRC. The panels were, at best, mediocre. Since there was a lack of panel guests, the panels were manned by what were really only fan-grade guests. That's not to say these fan panelists didn't try their best, but I didn't see much point in attending any writing panels where the guest themselves were unpublished.
There were two guests of note, Walter Koenig and Dave Arneson. I completely missed Koenig, and I believe he was significantly under the weather. I attempted to participate in a DM bull session with Arneson, alas, it never materialized.
The high points of the Con, for me, were playing an ancients sea warfare game and chatting with, albeit briefly, Arneson and Lou Zocchi in the dealers' room. Lou was actually there selling stuff!!! I couldn't resist, and bought a copy of his modified Tegel Manor. Modified how? I dunno, I've not even opened it. I did resist the urge, however, to purchase a Zocchihedron. That's one of his hundred-siders.
Soooooo... *ahem* .. why am I going this year? Well, after New Orleans hosted 2 very successful and long running Cons over the years, it now hosts zero, zip, nada. A fella who ran one of the successful Cons is going to host a couple of panels at this year's CoastCon. I have every intention of tying him to a chair and picking his brain for everything I can torture out of it. He didn't give up the Con because of lack of success, but quite the contrary, he gave it up because it was very successful. He'd been running it for about 15 years, and just got plain tired. Apparently, no one was willing to pick up the mantle. Enter me, stage right.
I'm hoping to present a small, dress rehearsal Con in the Big Easy either late this year, or early '08. Of course, much will depend on what, if anything, I learn from Mr. X at Coast Con.

Wow, that's ironic since the last CC I went to had Walter K. as a gues as well! Sad to hear about the con's decline; though 3 video rooms are better than none at all which has been the case at the last several cons I've been too. Which is odd, since playing movies should be easier now than ever before.
I'll probably try for CC next year if time permits. Maybe some of the Gulf Coast old schoolers could help revive CC. Or perhaps your NO con when it gets going. Hey, maybe that's the name you could use; "NO-Con"!
I've heard that Arnesson is not very communicative when it comes to D&D topics; only to miniature wargaming. Glad to hear Lou Zocci is still attending and while JG's Tegel is my fave, his redone Tegel has some really neat concepts and room descripts in it.

I've been mulling names for awhile, but I think you may have hit upon it.
