Characters...i call dibs on the FIGHTER (Dwarf) and PRIEST (human).
Rafael
Thinking again, for this game, I'd like to take my trademark Greyhawk character again, Ivid the Bowman (human ranger); as a sidekick, I would like to choose Raoul, the Boy Genius (a human sage)!
tarlyn
Ah of course that'll leave me with a roguish type mwahahahahah!!!! And mage too! Of course combining both is neat tho I rather play one of each. A nice evil roguish type yeah!
So again Sir Clarence what edition are we using and check your pm

Sorry for the lengthy silence. I am a bit busy the next days and can't login as often as I wish to, so please don't be anxious and bear with me. I promise to login as often as I can manage, okay?
First off: We have two more players! These are Jim (from Florida) and Mark (from the UK, also known as SoundouttheGalleon for those of you who also frequent DF). I'll post them the link to the board right after this.
As to the edition: Let's play 1E, okay? It's the system I'm most familiar with and it's also more appropriate for our game than 2E.
As to the characters: I think we should wait with this until Jim and Mark have joined us. Basically I don't mind which character types you want to play, but we should have an eye towards alignment. I'm saying this because tarlyn has already expressed interest in playing an assassin, which is fine by me but which makes rangers and paladins impossible. Also, the type of adventure that we're about to play might influence character class decisions but, as I said, I'd like to wait with telling you more until we're complete.

Hello all!
What characters are available for pick? I enjoy playing dwarven fighters, or Human Magic users the best.
Jim
Sir Clarence
If anyone wants to play two characters, that's fine with me, but please keep in mind that the more characters we have, the longer especially combat will take. Rafe already knows this from our PBEM game...
Let's see. Up to now we have:
tarlyn: Thief or Magic User (or perhaps both)
Rafe: Ranger (sages aren't character classes in 1E, sorry)
Glgnfz: Dwarven fighter or human cleric
Jim: Dwarven fighter or human magic user
tarlyn

I could play a thief/mage as at those levels it's interesting
I do own the 1st Ed PHB from 1978 so I can use that to create me p.c

Hiya guys - thanks to SirClarence for inviting me!
I'll play anything, pretty much - I think I'll see what everyone else before me makes first and then decide...
tarlyn
I wouildn't mind an Assassin if noone plays any Paladins. I mean he or she could pass for a rogue anyways
Rafael
Welcome , Halberad and... Soundie*!
*You need a shorter name with which we can call you! Ducks and runs...
Sir Clarence

Well tarlyn, you have to talk about this with Rafael. If he insists on playing a ranger, you can't play an assassin and the other way round. Those two classes don't get along well within one group. If you want to play an elven thief/magic user, please remember that 1st edition has level caps for demi-humans (not for the thief class though). A grey elf MU would cap at level 11 (in case he has an INT score of 18).
The same is true for dwarven fighters in case Jim and/or Glgnfz want to play one. Level 9 is maximum when you're having a STR score of 18.
Whatever you decide to play: The party should at least include one cleric for this adventure. So... please announce your (final) choice and we continue from there on.
tarlyn
OK I can play a normal Rogue, Raf can play his Ranger. A female human Rogue, level?
Glgnfz
okay - i'll take a cleric. make that a human one...
tarlyn
P.S I nominate Glgnfz for the coolest avatar !!!!!
Halberad
Hello Rafeal, Hey Mark!!!
Well I was curious what level will the game start out at? If it is higher that 9th level, Then I will play either a Human fighter, or a magic user. It does not matter to me.
Jim
Rafael
I would have left the choice to Tarlyn, but sine things seem already set, of course I'll enjoy playing good ol' Ivid...
Sensitive question: Can I use the OSRIC manual for building my character?
- Don't own any 1e rulebooks any more...
Sir Clarence
We now have:
A ranger (Rafael)
A thief (tarlyn)
A human cleric (Glgnfz)
A fighter or magic user (Jim)
In case that Jim chooses the fighter, there's still need for a magic user (Mark?).
Okay, on to actual character creation.
Each one of you can create his character all by himself (stats, spells, equipment, magic items, wealth).
Character level should be 16.
A few guidelines:
1. Be sensible in equipping your character. Although 16th level is very powerful, I don't want them to be munchkins. This means no weapons or armor of +4 or +5 quality, please. Also no magic items that tend to be unbalancing, like the cube of force, the various girdles of giant strength, rings of three wishes, vorpal blades etc. You get my meaning.
2. No weapon specialization. The only thing that we'll use from Unearthed Arcana will be the spells. So those of you who play magic users, feel free to stock your spellbooks with UA spells if you want. The same is true for clerics of course.
3. No psionics.
That's about all I can think of right now. Those of you who don't have access to the 1st edition books can use OSRIC for character creation of course. When you're done, please send me your character sheets to SirClarence@gmx.net and I will review them and see whether there are any inconsistencies with the rules (differences between OSRIC and AD&D for example).
Have fun!

What form of charsheet shall we use? - Isn't there a flexible 1e sheet out there thatz we can use? - Don't recall where I saw that one...
Sir Clarence
Use whatever character sheet you want. Dragonsfoot has several free for download here: http://www.dragonsfoot.org/cs/#cs1e18
tarlyn
That's fine but I don't know how to um type in my scores on a jpg . I do have the scores rolled using the DF pc generator. Sir Clarence I can use the 1st Edition PHB for my p.c's creation? Her name is Eilkhan Tarmitos, human female.

SotG is used on Dragonsfoot, or Mark - well, it is my name
I've never played a Magic-User of that high a level - but there's a first time for everything...
About magic items, Andreas - shall I use the tables for equipping NPCs in the 1e DMG? Or is that not suitable? Perhaps you could give us an XP limit and let us buy items up to that value...
A guide to how many spells of each level in the spell book would be good, too...otherwise I could go mad
EDIT: Now I think about it, I could go level 5 fighter/level 11 magicuser and be an elf...

tarlyn

Really sorry, am kind of busy. Like Rafael n everyone else here, WELCOME TO WAYFARER"S INN and the tribute game!
Halberad

I will be a fighter then. BUT Andreas how about dual class for humans? Or even a bard? I will roll up tomorrow and do we submitt them to you Andreas?
Jim
SoundOutTheGalleon
I think as I have pretty much decided on a fighter/magicuser, I will take a rough estimate of XP for 15th level and see how many levels I can get in each class...are we using UA level limits?
Sir Clarence
Mark's character: I'm not sure whether your choice to play an elven F/MU of levels 5/11 or thereabouts is a wise one, Mark. Even though the XPs might sum to the same amount (yes, we use UA level limits), The Tomb of Rahotep is a killer dungeon a la Tomb of Horrors, and the party could perhaps truly need a MU of level 16 because of his higher spell level.... . In the end it's your choice of course.
Magic items: You all can use either the tables in the DMG or the UA (I forgot about that). Choose whatever you deem appropriate for your character - I really don't mind as long as it isn't ultra-powerful.
Spells: The number of spells in the MU's spellbook depends on his INT score and his level. Let's wait for your final decision Mark and decide afterwards, ok?
Jim's character: A dual-classed human would be okay. Which combination do you have in mind? I'd also agree to a bard, even though this would power up the party significantly...

I've had a quick look at XP for a 15th level mage - I could probably get a F/MU/Cleric of about 7/11/5 which would be quite cool. I'll do a straight human MU and a F/MU/Cleric and have a look at them both...
tarlyn

My pc is done. On it's way Sir Clarence. Even going to use a pic I really like for her. Kate Beckinsdale..................
Yeah, from Underworld!

my character will have to wait. i'm going to dm on a con today - "keep on the borderlands" of course.
i'll do the character tomorrow.

Rafael

Mine will come today or tomorrow, as soon as I get my university work done here.

"university work" - isn't that a paradoxon?!?

Okay.
Rafael

I will need the weekend to make the character. Please start already, don't wait for me!
Mine will be a pretty standard human ranger, lvl 16!

Take your time, Rafael. Up to now, the only character I have is from tarlyn....

Thanks a lot!

I'll go for a human mage, level 16 (to get that 8th level spell!) if no one else wants to play a mage...if I had a a clear choice I would play the cleric.
I would appreciate some guidance on amount and level of power of magic items - or the temptation to go for staffs of power/mage, robe of archmage, cube of force, etc will be hard to resist. Perhaps an XP limit? I tihnk the tables on magic items for NPCs in the back of the DMG aren't that useful in this instance...

Looks as if you're stuck with the magic user, Mark. Unless someone else wants to swap....

A guideline is difficult for me to give, and since I don't use magic item XPs, I really don't have an idea what amount to give. Just use common sense and put together a list that you find to be okay and try to avoid those items that we all know might be unbalancing (like the cube of force). A staff of power would be okay for me but not a staff of the magi. Whenever you're unsure, put the item on the list, perhaps with an alternative item, and I'll tell you which one to take. Don't worry - I'm generally laid-back with these things.
Alternatively, I could put together a list of magic items that I would find suitable for this character and you can decide whether you like it or not or if you find some things to be missing.

Rafael
My 1e knowledge is at a total KNOWLEDGE HOLE.
Can anyone please point me to a quick easy, and unequivocal way to roll out the stats for the good Bowman?
Worst thing is, since that "Ivid" started as a 1e character, I should have a charsheet somewhere, but I can't find it any more...
Sir Clarence
The usual method IMC is to roll 4d6 and drop the lowest. Arrange the results then as you wish. Minimum scores for a ranger are:
STR 13
INT 13
WIS 14
CON 15
As for the character sheets: Check out the DF link that I posted before, Rafi!
Rafael
Thank you, my friend! Rolling it won't be the problem - making it a good level 16 character will...
But I'll surely have more time now, NOW THAT YOU HAVE CARELESSLY BUTCHERED GOOD MURIJAMI...
Rafael
Hmmm... This can't be that complicated.
Will ask at DF if they know a way to convert back from 3e to 1e.
Can't wait for the fellow grognard to plunge on me!
SoundOutTheGalleon
I wouldn't get into 'conversion' as such - keep the stats, race, class and magic items and then work out all his abilities from there.
Sir Clarence
Another option: Email me your character and let me do the conversion!
SoundOutTheGalleon
Magicuser level 16 submitted - if anyone wants to play him instead, just let me know :-) I haven't played 1e for 22 years and never played a high level MU so people will have to bear with me!
Rafael
Thank you, Clarence! However, I'll try to get it done myself first - so I have the need to get a bit into 1e again... Can't be that of an effort to design a character....
Sir Clarence
Folks, will this game ever see the light of day or is it just a flash in the pan? While I do have tarlyn's and Mark's characters and know that Rafe is working on his (or at least I hope so), I have never heard from Glgnfz and Jim again. So what's up?
Sir Clarence
Glgnfz asked me to prepare a chracter for him since he doesn't have the time for it right now. I still need characters from Rafael and Jim to finally get the game started.
I've also uploaded a file that lists all the deities of Khemit. Please pick a patron deity for your character from that list and tell me which one you chose. Here's the link:

Had my exam on Thursday, so I am still cleaning up the mess here.
Will come up with that darn character ASAP.

Glgnfz

okay! i'm ready to spend some time at the wayfarer's inn.
sorry for my absence, but rl-stuff came first the last weeks. let's kick some monster butt à la gygaxienne!
Sir Clarence

Cool. I've pinged Jim to send me a character too and then we should be about ready to start.
I hope that tarlyn and Mark still log in from time to time and haven't given up yet...

I read that as Kermit so I'm worshipping animal and of course the swedish chef!

aaargh! i'm so involved in the changes our school is going through and the rpg stuff i'm writing, that i can't even finish this character! i hate me!
... just give me a few more days...
Sir Clarence
Ok, we'll wait. Jim is also late with his character and Mark asked me whether his magic user can have a henchman, so this will also have to be done before. At least Rafael has agreed to let me create his ranger, lest we wait for ages....
Hang on guys, I'm positive that we will start this game sometime this year.
Rafael
Just got mine! Clarence, you're the best!
Now I have to catch some sleep, then I'll give it a closer look!
Let's game, friends!!!
tarlyn
Woooo-hoooo!!!!!!!!!!
Sir Clarence
Just to let you know that I haven't forgotten this....
I now have three (Mark, Rafael and tarlyn) and a half (Glgnfz) characters ready for play. I don't know what's up with Jim but he didn't reply to my last email and so I suppose that he has lost interest or doesn't have the time to play right now.
So what do you guys think: Should we start playing anyway? Glgnfz and Jim could join in at a later time.
Clarence
Rafael
Hell, yes!!!
tarlyn
Yes please lets start!
Sir Clarence
We'll start gaming the next week then. I'll write an announcement email to all participants to let them know and then we'll see who's there and who isn't. tarlyn, could you give me your email address? Sometimes it's better to contact people via email, especially when there are attachments like maps, pictures and so on.
One more question: Since we have decided not to play the whole Necropolis campaign but only its last part, how much are you interested in getting a detailed introduction and background story? I could make a writeup of anything that comes before, but this would be quite lengthy and would take some time to write. The other option would be to simply start at the tomb's entrance with only a very brief introduction, leaving out the whole background of the campaign. I would leave this decision up to you.
tarlyn
My email I'll send via p.m As for introduction and such, do our pc's need to know all that if we are just going to be going into the dungeon?
Sir Clarence
Not necessarily. There are a few magical items that your group possesses (found during the earlier stages of the campaign and needed in the final chapter) but that's about all. I'll post them tomorrow or tuesday and you have to decide who carries them.
Besides that, we can of course make it a dungeon crawl without background - an introduction would be mainly for the flavor.
PS - Thanks for the email addy.
tarlyn
Sweet and thanks again Sir Clarence for this chance to play 1st edition!
Sir Clarence
My experience with online and PBEM games showed me that it is most useful to appoint one player as the group's caller. There are often situations in which minor decisions have to be made, and in these it speeds up play immensely when the caller decides what the group does. It also helps whenever some players cannot post regularly - as will certainly be the case here. Since we're currently only three - tarlyn, Rafael and Mark - one of you should do this job.
