It won't be fan fiction since it will be written by professional writers, but I know what you mean. However, Tolkien wrote alot of notes on what happened during those 80 years so they should have quite a bit of material to draw on. The other good part is that they can bring back some of the original cast, which would be nice. OTOH, I am mainly interested in the movie that will be based on the Hobbit itself.

Don't get me wrong - I find the idea of any big budget fantasy movie interesting; I just think there are way better ways to explore that franchise, say, filming "The Children of Hurin", or other parts of the Simarillion.
Apart from that, I'll be surely going to watch it. As you might already know, I didn't like the books - it was really the movies that sold me on the franchise.
